Munich, April 2 – German luxury carmaker BMW has started construction on a new battery factory in Bavaria, a spokesperson for the company confirmed on Tuesday.

Key points:

  • BMW has started construction on a battery factory in Bavaria.
  • Capacity: 600,000 batteries per year.
  • Number of employees: approx. 1,600.
  • Construction has drawn controversial reactions.
  • Referendum: clear majority in favor of building the factory.
  • Location: near existing BMW factories in Bavaria.

The plant is expected to produce up to 600,000 batteries per year and employ around 1,600 people once completed.

Construction work has already begun, with heavy machinery clearing the ground and preparing the site for foundation work. The local government only approved the construction last week.

However, the construction has drawn controversial reactions. Critics complain about the loss of valuable agricultural land. However, in a referendum last autumn, voters overwhelmingly voted in favor of building the factory.

According to BMW, the factory will be located near other BMW factories in Bavaria, where the batteries will be installed in the cars.
