Istanbul, April 30, 2024 – Turkish Airlines is poised for a significant fleet modernization and expansion as it enters into negotiations with Airbus and Boeing to acquire over 230 aircraft. This move aligns with the airline’s ambitious ten-year plan to double its passenger traffic and establish itself as a leading global air carrier.

Driven by the goal of doubling its passenger numbers by 2025 and becoming a top-tier global airline, Turkish Airlines aims to strengthen its position on lucrative routes between Europe, Asia, and Africa. The acquisition of new aircraft will play a crucial role in achieving this strategic objective.

In December 2023, Turkish Airlines already signed an agreement with Airbus to purchase 355 A321 and A350 aircraft. The current negotiations focus on acquiring an additional 235 aircraft from Airbus and Boeing.

Turkish Airlines has not yet disclosed its preferred manufacturer for the remaining 235 aircraft. According to Ahmet Bolat, the company’s CEO, they maintain a “balanced policy” when procuring aircraft from both manufacturers. However, due to Boeing’s current challenges, Turkish Airlines is taking a cautious approach and will wait for the situation to develop before making a final decision.

The aircraft acquisition represents a substantial investment for Turkish Airlines. The company will need to carefully consider the financing of the purchase and ensure that its debt remains at a sustainable level.

If Turkish Airlines successfully executes its planned aircraft purchase, it will position itself as one of the largest and most modern airlines globally. This will not only benefit the airline itself but also contribute positively to the Turkish economy and tourism sector. (Reuters)
