Germany Leads Electric Vehicle Export Race: Nearly 800,000 Shipped in 2023

Germany emerged as the global leader in electric vehicle (EV) exports in 2023, shipping a staggering 786,000 units. This represents a significant 58% increase compared to 2022. In contrast, the country imported 446,000 electric vehicles during the same period.

The value of exported EVs reached a remarkable €36 billion, far exceeding the import value of €14.1 billion. China was the biggest source of imported EVs, accounting for 29% of the total, followed by South Korea with nearly 10%.

Electric vehicles represent only a quarter of all new car exports

Despite the strong growth in EVs, they still only make up about a quarter of all new cars exported from Germany. In 2023, the country produced a total of 973,000 electric vehicles, while production of combustion engine cars increased by 7.9% to reach 2.4 million.
