Sopron, August 19 (FFN) – German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Monday firmly rejected any reductions in the financial resources allocated in the state budget for military support to Ukraine, according to a report by DPA.
During his visit to the Hungarian city of Sopron, Steinmeier reiterated Germany’s position as the largest provider of aid to Ukraine in Europe, which has been under attack by Russia. “And therefore, I expect that Germany will remain a large, indeed the largest, supporter of Ukraine in Europe,” Steinmeier emphasized.
Earlier, German Finance Minister Christian Lindner had written to the Ministries of Defense and Foreign Affairs, stating that new commitments related to military support for Ukraine could only be made if funding was secured in the budget plans for the current and coming years.
This year, Germany has allocated EUR 7.5 billion for military aid to Ukraine, while the budget proposal for 2025 includes EUR 4 billion for this purpose.
