  • Harvest Decline: Germany’s grain production fell to 39.3 million tons in 2024, down from 42 million tons in 2023, according to Deutscher Bauernverband (DBV).
  • Impact of Rain: Continuous and heavy rainfall severely affected both the volume and quality of the harvest, as reported by DPA.
  • Economic Concerns: Rising operational costs, including energy prices, have led to fears about the future profitability of grain farming in Germany.

Germany’s grain harvest for 2024 has seen a significant decline, with production dropping to 39.3 million tons from 42 million tons last year. This sharp decrease, reported by the German Farmers’ Association (DBV) and informed by DPA, is largely due to persistent and heavy rainfall that disrupted both the growth and harvesting processes, leading to reduced volume and quality of the grain.

Joachim Rukwied, president of the DBV, expressed his disappointment, stating that the continuous wet weather, which began in autumn and lasted through early summer, along with a lack of sunlight, severely impacted the agricultural sector. Additionally, rising operational costs, especially energy expenses, are exacerbating the situation, making grain farming in Germany increasingly unprofitable.
