  • Uniper, Germany’s largest gas storage operator, has unveiled a hydrogen storage pilot project in the East Frisia region.
  • The project aims to test the feasibility of storing climate-neutral hydrogen under real-world conditions.
  • Uniper plans extensive hydrogen projects across Germany, Sweden, the UK, and the Netherlands.

Düsseldorf, August 27 (FinanceFlashNews.com)Uniper, Germany’s largest gas storage operator, has introduced a hydrogen storage pilot facility in the town of Krummhörn in the East Frisia region of northwest Germany. This facility will serve as a testing ground for materials and technologies over the next two years, assessing the feasibility of storing climate-neutral hydrogen under real-world and commercial conditions, according to the company.

The facility is expected to be operational soon, allowing Uniper to evaluate various technologies and procedures necessary for the safe and efficient storage of hydrogen. Hydrogen produced in a carbon-neutral manner is expected to play a key role in Germany’s transition to a climate-sustainable economic system, aligning with broader EU climate goals.

Uniper, which is now state-owned following rescue measures during the energy crisis, is considered a pioneer in developing Europe’s hydrogen economy. In addition to the Krummhörn project, the company has been testing hydrogen storage in porous rock in Bavaria for several months. Uniper also has ambitious plans for other hydrogen projects in Germany, Sweden, the UK, and the Netherlands.

One of these projects includes a large electrolyzer for hydrogen production and a terminal for green ammonia in Wilhelmshaven, approximately 70 kilometers from Krummhörn. More details on these plans can be found on the Uniper website.
