Edinburgh, Scotland – A historic freshwater pearl is set to fetch a hefty price when it goes under the hammer later this month. The Abernethy Pearl, believed to be the largest of its kind discovered in living memory, is expected to command up to £60,000 at the Lyon & Turnbull auction on August 21.
Discovered in 1967 by renowned Scottish pearl diver William Abernethy, the pearl is a true treasure. Weighing in at a substantial 43.6 grains, it’s part of the prestigious Cairncross Collection, which also includes other exquisite jewelry pieces.
The auction house anticipates significant interest in the pearl, with experts predicting it could even exceed its estimated price. As Ruth David, Head of Jewelry at Lyon & Turnbull, noted, “The Abernethy Pearl is undoubtedly the star of the sale.”
