Madrid, Spain – May 23, 2024 – Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing division of Amazon, today announced a €15.7 billion investment to build data centers in Aragon, northeastern Spain. The investment will be made over the next decade and will bring a number of benefits to the region and the Spanish economy as a whole.
The project is expected to create approximately 17,500 indirect jobs in local businesses and contribute to Spain’s gross domestic product (GDP) by €21.6 billion over the 10-year period.
“This new AWS commitment is a testament to the attractiveness of our country as a strategic technological hub in southern Europe,” said José Luis Escrivá, Spain’s Minister for Digital Transformation.
Jorge Azcón, President of the Regional Government of Aragon, called the investment "the largest in the history of the region."
Amazon, a pioneer in e-commerce, also has a dominant position in the cloud computing market. At the end of 2023, its market share in this segment was 31%, according to Stocklytics data. However, its competitors, Microsoft and Google, are catching up, with market shares of 24% and 11% in the cloud business, respectively.
The race in the cloud computing segment has become even more heated in recent times with the advent of artificial intelligence and the language model ChatGPT.
Amazon’s investment in data centers in Spain is a significant step forward for the country’s digital transformation and strengthens its position as a leader in innovation in southern Europe.
