Jakarta, April 17, 2024 – American tech giant Apple is exploring manufacturing opportunities in Indonesia, CEO Tim Cook said during a meeting with Indonesian President Joko Widodo, according to TASR, citing an AP report.

This potential expansion comes as Apple seeks to diversify its supply chain away from China, which is currently the main producer of its smartphones and tablets. The company has already shifted some production to Vietnam and more recently to India.

Indonesia, with its rich reserves of raw materials like nickel and bauxite and a growing tech sector, appears as an attractive alternative. The country’s government is also actively promoting foreign investment and offering various incentives for manufacturing companies.

While Apple does not yet have its own manufacturing plants in Indonesia, it has already invested nearly $100 million in developing the app developer ecosystem in the country. The opening of the fourth Apple Developer Academy in Bali this year is another step towards strengthening the company’s presence in Indonesia.

Key Points:

  • Apple is considering manufacturing in Indonesia as part of its supply chain diversification strategy.
  • Indonesia offers rich raw material reserves, a growing tech sector, and government incentives for investors.
  • Apple has already invested in developing the app developer ecosystem in Indonesia and plans to open another Apple Developer Academy.
