Wiesbaden, August 16 (FFN) – The number of employed persons in Germany continued to grow in the spring. In the second quarter of this year, 46.1 million people were employed or self-employed, representing a seasonally adjusted increase of 0.1% compared to the previous quarter and a 0.4% increase compared to the same period last year. This information comes from a report by DPA, citing data from the German Federal Statistical Office, Destatis.

The last time employment in Germany declined was in the first quarter of 2021, when the largest European economy was impacted by measures related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Overall, new jobs were created almost exclusively in the services sector, where an additional 229,000 jobs were added. In contrast, employment in the industrial and construction sectors continued to decline due to the slowing economy, with 65,000 fewer people employed compared to the second quarter of 2023. The number of self-employed individuals, including assisting family members, also decreased by 29,000 to 3.8 million. On the other hand, the number of employees increased by 196,000 or 0.5% to approximately 42.3 million.

On average, 318.2 hours were worked per employed or self-employed person in the second quarter, a 0.4% increase compared to the same period last year.
