JAKARTA, September 1, 2024 (FFN) – Indonesia is set to sign business deals worth $3.5 billion with various African countries as it hosts the second Indonesia-Africa Forum on the resort island of Bali, according to President Joko Widodo. The forum, which runs until September 3, aims to bolster economic cooperation as Indonesia seeks to expand its export markets.

“The partnership between Indonesia and Africa has significantly increased trade volumes and trade agreements,” President Widodo said during his opening remarks at the forum on Monday.

Several memorandums of understanding (MoUs) are expected to be signed at the event. These include a geothermal project between Indonesia’s state power utility Perusahaan Listrik Negara and Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), as well as an agreement between Indonesian pharmaceutical company Bio Farma and Ghana’s Atlantic Lifesciences Ltd, according to a statement from Indonesia’s foreign ministry on Sunday. Further details of the agreements were not provided.

Indonesian authorities have announced increased surveillance at airports during the forum to prevent the spread of mpox. The mpox outbreak was among the topics discussed during the Indonesia-Africa Parliamentary Forum held over the weekend, as reported by state news agency Antara.

Key Words: Indonesia-Africa Forum, $3.5 billion deals, economic cooperation, geothermal project, Bio Farma, mpox, Joko Widodo, trade agreements.
