Brighton, 9 September 2024 (FinanceFlashNews) – Unions are sounding the alarm over the UK government’s plan to ban new oil and gas licenses, warning that it could put 30,000 jobs at risk. At the TUC Congress in Brighton, delegates narrowly supported a motion opposing the ban until a fully funded plan is in place to ensure job security for North Sea workers (PA Media).

Unite and GMB, the second and third largest unions, argue that while climate change is critical, transitioning away from fossil fuels should not jeopardize workers’ livelihoods. They stress that protections must be in place before implementing new restrictions.

In contrast, some unions argue that immediate climate action is necessary, even if it results in job losses. They emphasize that there are “no jobs on a dead planet,” advocating for a swift transition to renewable energy.

The government is committed to ensuring a “proud future” for the North Sea with plans to invest in renewable technologies. However, concerns persist over the effectiveness and speed of these proposed solutions.
