Vienna, September 14 – Austria’s second-hand market is experiencing a significant boom, with more and more consumers turning to used goods. According to a survey conducted by the Handelsverband trade association, nearly every second person buys second-hand items multiple times a year, with an average annual expenditure of €195 on these products.
€2 Billion Market Annually
“We estimate the second-hand market in Austria is currently valued at approximately €2 billion annually,” said Rainer Will, Executive Director of Handelsverband. The most frequently purchased items include books, films, and clothing, while toys and furniture are also popular. A survey by the Republika agency revealed that nearly three-quarters of respondents have purchased second-hand goods at some point.
Online Platforms Leading the Way
About 59% of respondents stated they use online platforms such as Ebay, while flea markets (52%) and second-hand shops (37%) are also popular. The main reasons for choosing second-hand products are sustainability and the desire to save money. Many consumers also appreciate the ability to buy items that are no longer available in traditional retail stores.
