Berlin, April 1st, 2024 (Financeflashnews) – Germany has just made history. Starting today, adults over the age of 18 are legally allowed to grow and consume cannabis for recreational purposes. This groundbreaking step comes after the approval of the law on so-called “controlled legalization.”
Cultivation is also permitted
- Under the new law, adults can legally possess up to 25 grams of cannabis.
- Growing up to three cannabis plants is allowed within the household, with the final product not exceeding 50 grams in weight.
Cannabis clubs enter the scene
The law also opens the door for the establishment of so-called “cannabis clubs.” These non-profit entities will be able to distribute their own product to their members in limited quantities – up to 50 grams per person per month.
Think of a cannabis club as a cooperative for cannabis lovers. Instead of buying marijuana in a store, you become a member of the club and gain access to a wide range of products and services. In addition to distribution, some clubs also grow cannabis and organize educational activities for responsible use.
German cannabis clubs in numbers (estimated):
- 500+ clubs (rapid growth)
- 100,000+ members (expected to double)
- 5 tons of cannabis distributed monthly
- 20% of clubs with their own cultivation
- Most clubs offer cannabis education
Disclaimer: These statistics are estimated, as accurate data on German cannabis clubs is still limited due to the recent legalization.
Public spaces remain smoke-free
It is important to emphasize that cannabis consumption remains prohibited in public spaces, schools, and sports facilities, as well as within a 100-meter radius of these locations.
Why Germany legalize cannabis?
The German government expects cannabis legalization to primarily regulate the market and reduce the risks associated with its consumption. The decision was also driven by the continuous increase in cannabis use in the country, including among minors and young adults, despite its previous prohibition. The black market with unknown and potentially dangerous products also played a role in the decision-making process.
German opposition disagrees
However, cannabis legalization is not without criticism. The Christian Democrats and the AfD party have labeled the government’s proposal as a “gift to organized crime.” They fear an increase in addiction and negative effects on mental health. In case they come to power, these parties threaten to repeal the new law.
The future of cannabis in Germany
Germany’s move to legalize recreational cannabis for adults is a bold step that will undoubtedly be closely watched not only in Europe but around the world. Time will tell whether the government’s expectations will be met and whether legalization will prove to be a beneficial step for society or whether the opposition’s concerns will be realized. One thing is for sure, though – Germany has just made history as the first major European country to embark on this path.
