Düsseldorf, August 8, 2024 – German energy giant Uniper, which was bailed out by the government during the 2022 energy crisis triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, is set to make a significant repayment. The company announced plans to return over €3.4 billion to the federal government next spring.
The exact amount of the repayment will be determined once the 2024 business figures are available, according to Jutta Dönges, the company’s chief financial officer. The rescue of Uniper, a key importer of Russian gas, cost the German government around €13.5 billion. With the German state now holding a majority stake of over 99%, Uniper’s repayment marks a significant step towards restoring the company’s financial health and reducing the burden on taxpayers.
Uniper’s ability to repay a portion of the bailout funds reflects its successful efforts to adapt to the new energy landscape. The company has been working to diversify its gas supply sources and reduce its dependence on Russia.
The repayment also comes as Germany continues to grapple with the aftermath of the energy crisis. While the country has made significant progress in filling its gas storage facilities, concerns remain about the long-term security of its energy supply.
